Shed and Outbuilding Painting in Kelowna

Sheds, shops and barns are usually the last buildings on a property to get attention, and the first to show rot along the bottom edge or rust around the fasteners. Pacific Painting Kelowna paints outbuildings of every size, from a backyard garden shed in Glenmore to a workshop on an acreage in Lake Country or East Kelowna. We bring more than 15 years of exterior painting experience to buildings that often get less care than they deserve.

Our clients include homeowners tidying up the backyard, acreage and hobby farm owners with shops and barns, orchard and vineyard properties with equipment and pump buildings, and sellers who know a tired shed drags down listing photos. Outbuildings are built from a mix of materials, including T1-11 plywood, board-and-batten, engineered wood and steel cladding. Each one needs its own prep and coating, and we explain the choice in plain terms.

We match outbuildings to the main house so the whole property looks finished, or pick a classic barn or heritage colour if you prefer. Licensed, insured and WorkSafeBC-covered crews do the work, and each outbuilding gets the same written 1-year labour warranty as a house. Quotes are written, itemised and clear about any repairs we find, so nothing comes as a surprise once work starts.

Buildings We Paint

If it has walls and sits on your property, we can usually paint it. These are the outbuildings we see most often around Kelowna.

  • Garden Sheds

Prefab and site-built sheds in wood, T1-11 or engineered siding, usually painted to match the house trim and body.

  • Detached Garages

Siding, trim, fascia and overhead doors on detached garages, often done alongside the house so colours stay identical.

  • Workshops and Studios

Backyard shops, art studios and home offices, where we can also paint the interior walls if you want the inside refreshed too.

  • Barns and Equipment Sheds

Wood and steel barns, hay sheds and machine shelters on hobby farms and acreages in Lake Country and the surrounding area.

  • Orchard and Vineyard Buildings

Packing sheds, cold storage and equipment buildings on orchards and vineyards, painted to look tidy for visitors or simply to stop the weathering.

  • Pump Houses and Utility Sheds

Small irrigation pump houses, well sheds and garbage enclosures that are easy to forget until the wood starts to rot.

T1-11, Wood and Metal Siding

Outbuildings use cheaper siding than most houses, and each type fails in its own way. The prep is what makes the paint last.

SidingWhat usually goes wrongHow we prep and coat it
T1-11 plywoodBottom edges soak up water and delaminate, face veneer checksSeal the bottom edge, fill checks, prime with exterior primer, brush paint into the grooves
Board-and-battenGaps open, nail heads rust and bleedReset or spot-prime nails, caulk only where water enters, two coats of 100% acrylic
Engineered woodUnsealed cut edges swellSeal every cut edge and paint with a 100% acrylic exterior paint
Steel claddingFactory finish chalks and fades, scratches rustWash and de-chalk, treat rust, metal primer, direct-to-metal acrylic

T1-11 is the most common shed siding we see, and its weak spot is the bottom edge. Once the plies start to separate, paint alone will not save it, so badly delaminated sheets are best replaced before we coat the building.

Galvanized steel needs special care, because oil-based alkyd paint reacts with the zinc and peels off in sheets. We use primers and acrylic coatings made for galvanized metal instead.

Matching Your House

A freshly painted house next to a faded shed makes both look worse. Matching them pulls the whole yard together.

If you have leftover paint or the colour codes from your last house repaint, we can use the same colours on the outbuilding. If not, we colour-match from a sample of the house siding at a paint store, then test it on a hidden spot of the shed before committing.

Rough siding and different materials can make the same colour read slightly differently. We tell you up front if a perfect match is unlikely and suggest using the house trim colour, which is often the safer choice.

Planning a full refresh? Painting the shed in the same schedule as your exterior house painting gives you an exact match and one setup, and our colour consultation can settle the palette first.

Rot, Rust and Ground Contact

Most outbuilding damage starts at the bottom, where siding meets soil, gravel and snow.

  • Repairing Bottom Trim and Skirting

We probe the lower boards and trim with an awl to find soft wood. Short runs of rotted trim or skirting board can be replaced as part of the job, while rot in sill plates or framing needs a carpenter before we paint.

  • Treating Rust on Metal

Loose rust is wire-brushed or ground back to firm metal and spot-primed with a rust-inhibitive primer. Rusted fasteners on steel cladding are primed individually or replaced, so they do not bleed orange streaks through the new paint.

  • Keeping Paint Out of the Splash Zone

Siding buried in soil or mulch never dries out and no paint will last on it. We recommend a gap of several inches between ground and siding, with gravel along the base to stop rain splash and sprinkler spray.

Shed Painting Costs

These typical ranges include paint and materials. The real figure comes from a written, itemised quote after we see the building.

BuildingTypical rangeWhat moves the price
Garden shed or small outbuilding$500 to $1,800Size, siding type, trim and door detail
Detached garage or larger shopQuoted after a site visitWall area, overhead doors, height, repairs
Barn or farm buildingQuoted after a site visitSize, metal or wood, rust or rot repair, access

Access is a bigger factor on outbuildings than people expect. A shed tucked against a fence or hedge, or a barn across a field from the driveway, takes longer to set up and protect around. Most garden sheds are finished in a day or two including repairs, while detached garages and larger shops usually take two to four days.

Our 1-year labour warranty covers peeling or poor adhesion caused by our workmanship, but not damage from ground contact we have flagged on the quote. For exterior prices beyond outbuildings, see painting costs in Kelowna.

Shed and Outbuilding FAQs

Can you paint a metal barn or shop?

Yes. We wash off chalk and dirt, treat any rust back to sound metal and prime bare spots with a metal primer. The finish is a direct-to-metal acrylic, which bonds to steel, flexes as the panels expand in summer heat and resists fading.

Can you paint the inside of a shop or detached garage?

Yes. Interior walls of finished shops, studios and garages are painted much like a basement or utility room, usually in a washable eggshell or satin. Unfinished framing and OSB can be primed and painted to brighten the space.

Do you paint small garden sheds?

Yes, and small sheds are welcome. On its own a small shed sits at the low end of our price range, so many owners add it to a fence, deck or exterior job to make the most of one setup and one visit.

Should I stain or paint a wood shed?

Paint or solid stain hides patched and mismatched boards and matches the house best. Semi-transparent stain suits new cedar sheds where you want the grain to show, and it wears away rather than peeling.
