Paint Colour Consultation in Kelowna

More repaints stall over colour than over price or scheduling. A white that looked clean on the chip turns grey in a north-facing bedroom, or a greige reads pink beside a maple floor. Pacific Painting Kelowna offers in-home colour consultations so you choose paint in the light, and against the floors and counters, that it will actually live with, before a single wall is painted.

Our painters have spent more than 15 years watching colours go up on Okanagan walls, and that teaches you quickly how a shade behaves once it covers a whole room. We help homeowners choosing interior and exterior colours, strata owners working within an approved palette, and businesses matching brand colours for offices, shops and restaurants. Some clients want a plan for the whole house, while others just need a second opinion on two whites.

Every session ends with a written colour schedule listing the brand, colour name and code, and sheen for each room or surface. You can use it with us or with any painter, and if we paint the job, the schedule becomes part of your written quote. We are licensed, insured and WorkSafeBC covered, and we serve Kelowna, West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation lands and Lake Country.

How Okanagan Light Changes Colour

Paint chips are designed under neutral store lighting. Kelowna homes get some of the strongest, most changeable light in the province, and it shifts every colour you put on the wall.

  • North-Facing Rooms

North light is cool and indirect, so greys look bluer and whites can look flat or dingy. Warm whites and colours with a slight yellow or red undertone usually hold up better here.

  • South- and West-Facing Rooms

Hot Okanagan sun washes colours out at midday and turns them amber in the late afternoon. Colours that look rich on the chip often read lighter here, so we sample a shade or two deeper.

  • Lake Views and Big Windows

Homes facing Okanagan Lake, from Lakeshore Road to the West Kelowna hillsides, pick up reflected blue light off the water. It cools down soft neutrals more than most people expect.

  • Evening and Artificial Light

Warm 2700K bulbs push colours toward yellow, while cooler 4000K or daylight bulbs make them crisper and greyer. We look at samples with your lights on as well as in daylight.

What Happens in a Consultation

A consultation is a working visit in your home, not a showroom appointment. Some people search for a color consultant, others for an interior designer; our sessions sit between the two and focus purely on paint.

  1. Before we arrive

Gather what you already like, such as photos, fabric, a cushion or a chip you saved. Note which rooms are on the list and which are staying as they are.

  2. Review the fixed elements

We start with what will not change: floors, countertops, tile, brick, cabinets and, outside, the roof and stone. Those set the undertones every paint colour has to work with.

  3. Large samples on the wall

We narrow the options to a few candidates and show them on large sample boards, moved around the room and checked at different times of day.

  4. Your written colour schedule

You get a written list of every colour, with brand, name, code and sheen for each room and surface, ready to hand to a painter or the paint store.

Whole-Home Colour Flow

Open-concept homes in neighbourhoods like Kettle Valley, Wilden and the Upper Mission let you see four or five rooms from one spot. Picking colours one room at a time in those houses usually ends with a patchwork.

We build a small palette instead: one main neutral for the shared spaces, a trim and ceiling white that suits it, and a few related colours for bedrooms, an office or a feature wall. Colours change at corners, doorways or bulkheads so the shift looks planned.

The same approach works for older split-levels in Rutland or Glenmore, where the stairs connect three or four levels. A consistent stairwell colour ties the floors together, even if each level has its own palette.

Exterior Colours, Strata Rules and Neighbourhood Fit

Exterior colours are bigger commitments. They last longer, cost more to change, and are sometimes not entirely your decision.

  • Strata Approved Schemes

Under the Strata Property Act, strata corporations control exterior appearance through their bylaws, and colour changes usually need council approval. We work from the approved scheme and help prepare samples for council if you are proposing a change.

  • Roof, Stone and Fixed Materials

A roof, stone veneer or brick will be there for decades, so the body and trim colours have to suit its undertones. We hold samples against them outdoors, in full sun and in shade.

  • Heritage Areas and Neighbourhood Fit

Homes in Kelowna's Abbott Street and Marshall Street Heritage Conservation Areas follow city guidelines for exterior changes, so check with the City of Kelowna before a major colour change. Elsewhere, we look at the street as a whole so your house stands out for the right reasons.

Strong Okanagan UV also fades deep and saturated exterior colours faster than lighter ones, which we factor into recommendations for our exterior painting clients. Strata councils planning a full repaint will find timelines and approval steps in our strata repaint planning guide.

Commercial and Brand Colours

Brand colours are usually defined for print or screens, and the closest paint match is not always obvious. We take your brand guide or a physical sample and have it matched, then test it on the wall under your actual lighting.

For workplaces, we balance brand colours with calm neutrals that do not tire staff out. Our office painting clients often use brand colour on a single reception or feature wall.

Shops and restaurants are different, because colour has to sell. Our retail store painting and restaurant and bar painting pages cover the products and scheduling for those spaces.

Sheen, LRV and Undertones Explained

Three things change how a colour looks far more than its name does. Knowing them makes any colour decision easier.

FactorWhat it isHow it changes a colour
UndertoneThe hidden colour inside a neutral, such as green in a grey or pink in a beigeShows up next to floors, counters and other paint, and is the most common reason a colour feels wrong
LRV (light reflectance value)A number from 0 (black) to 100 (pure white) printed on most chipsHigher LRV colours brighten dim rooms, while low LRV colours absorb light and feel deeper
SheenHow much light the dried paint reflects, from flat to glossHigher sheens make a colour look slightly lighter and richer, and show more wall flaws

Comparing a sample against pure white paper is the fastest way to spot an undertone. For which sheen belongs in which room, see our guide to the best paint finish for every room.

Consultation Cost

An in-home colour consultation typically costs $150 to $250 per session in Kelowna.

Where your session falls in that range depends on how many rooms or exterior elevations we cover, and whether interior and exterior are planned together. We confirm the price when you book, so there are no surprises.

The written colour schedule is yours to keep and use with any painter. For what the painting itself costs, our painting costs in Kelowna page sets out typical ranges.

Colour Consultation FAQs

Can you match a colour from a photo or old can?

An old can is the best source, because the label usually lists the exact formula or colour code. A paint chip or a small piece of painted drywall can be scanned with a spectrophotometer at the paint store. Photos are unreliable, since cameras and screens shift colour, so we use them only as a starting point.

Should I choose paint colours before or after flooring?

After, whenever possible. There are thousands of paint colours and far fewer flooring and countertop options, so it is easier to match paint to them than the other way round.

Do I need a consultation if I already know my colours?

No. If you are confident, we will simply paint from your list. We still recommend a large sample on the wall in each room first, because a colour you love in one house can look quite different in yours.

Why does my paint look different on the wall than on the chip?

A chip is small, viewed under store lighting and surrounded by white card. On a full wall the colour reflects onto itself and picks up your room's light, which usually makes it look stronger and sometimes warmer or cooler.
