Eco-Friendly, Low-VOC House Painting in Kelowna
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are the carbon-based chemicals that evaporate from paint as it dries and give a freshly painted room its sharp smell. Pacific Painting Kelowna paints homes with low-VOC and zero-VOC products, so far less of that vapour ends up in the air you live in while the work is under way. In more than 15 years of painting Okanagan homes, we have watched low-VOC paint go from a special order to our everyday standard.
This service is built for households where paint fumes are more than a nuisance: parents getting a nursery ready, families with young children or pets, people with asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivities, seniors, and anyone working from a home office. Property managers ask for it too, when tenants stay in their suites during a repaint. Low-odour paint is already the default on our interior painting jobs, and this service takes it several steps further.
Choosing the right paint is only part of the job. We also ask for zero-VOC tints, plan ventilation room by room, and handle wash water and leftover paint responsibly. The work is done by a licensed, insured, WorkSafeBC-covered crew and backed by our written 1-year labour warranty, across Kelowna, West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation lands and Lake Country.
What Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Really Mean
The labels on a paint can sound precise. In practice, they need a little interpretation.
VOCs help paint flow and form a film, and most of them escape into the room during the first hours and days after painting. That is the smell, and it is why ventilation matters even with good products.
Canada already caps VOC content in paint sold here. The federal VOC Concentration Limits for Architectural Coatings Regulations (SOR/2009-264) set a maximum for each product category, so even ordinary paint today contains far less solvent than paint did a generation ago.
Low-VOC and zero-VOC are manufacturer labels rather than categories in that regulation. Zero-VOC generally means only trace amounts are left in the untinted base, and low-VOC means the product sits well below the legal limit for its type.
It is also worth knowing that VOC content is not the whole story. Some paints carry low odour but still release small amounts of other compounds, which is why third-party emissions certifications, covered below, are useful.
Who Low-VOC Painting Is For
Any home benefits from cleaner products, but some households notice the difference far more than others.
Babies and Young Children
Children breathe faster than adults and spend more time close to freshly painted walls and floors. Parents preparing a nursery are our most common low-VOC clients.
Pets
Dogs, cats and especially birds are sensitive to fumes and cannot step outside when the smell bothers them. We plan the order of rooms so pets always have a well-aired space.
Asthma, Allergies and Sensitivities
Strong paint odours are a common trigger for people with asthma or chemical sensitivities. We share product data sheets in advance, so you or your doctor can review them before work starts.
Home Offices and Seniors
If you work from home or have an older parent living with you, leaving for a week is not realistic. Low-VOC paint and careful sequencing let the household carry on around us.
Products We Use
We quote low-VOC products by default on interior work and name every one on your estimate. These are the lines we typically use for sensitive households.
| Product | Type | Where we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Benjamin Moore Eco Spec | Zero-VOC interior latex | Walls and ceilings in occupied homes and rentals |
| Sherwin-Williams Harmony | Zero-VOC interior acrylic | Bedrooms, nurseries and living areas |
| Cloverdale Horizon | Zero-VOC interior latex | Walls and ceilings when a client prefers Cloverdale colours |
| Waterborne primers | Low-VOC drywall and bonding primers | New drywall, patches and glossy surfaces |
| Shellac or oil stain blockers | Higher-VOC primers | Small spot repairs only, such as water stains, with extra ventilation |
Many low-VOC lines also carry third-party certifications, such as the MPI Green Performance Standard, GREENGUARD Gold or the asthma & allergy friendly program. Certifications vary by product and sheen, so we check the current data sheet rather than relying on the label.

Does Low-VOC Paint Perform as Well?
Mostly, yes. Premium zero-VOC paints today are a long way from the thin, chalky products of 20 years ago, but there are honest trade-offs.
- Durability. Premium zero-VOC wall paints scrub and wear well. Budget zero-VOC paints are a different story, which is why we only quote premium lines.
- Coverage. Some zero-VOC paints hide slightly less in a single coat, especially deep colours. Our standard of two finish coats takes care of it.
- Dry time. Many low-VOC paints dry fast, and in dry Okanagan summers that shortens the time to keep a wet edge. We work smaller sections and keep rooms cooler to avoid lap marks.
- Trim and cabinets. Hard enamels for doors and cabinets are where the VOC gap is widest. Waterborne enamels are much lower than oil paints, but they are not zero, which is worth planning for with trim and baseboard painting or cabinets in a lived-in home.
Ventilation and Cure Time
Paint is dry to the touch in an hour or two, but it keeps releasing small amounts of vapour as it cures. Good airflow shortens that stage.
While we paint
We open windows where weather allows, set a box fan in a window blowing out, and close off the work area from the rest of the house.
The same evening
Most rooms painted with zero-VOC products can be used that night, with a window cracked and the door open.
The first few days
Keep airing the room daily and run your furnace or HRV fan to keep air moving through the house.
The next two to four weeks
The film reaches full hardness, so avoid scrubbing the walls or pushing furniture tight against them.
Responsible Cleanup and Leftover Paint
Eco-friendly painting does not stop at the paint can. What happens to wash water, leftovers and empty containers matters too.
Washing Brushes and Rollers
We never rinse tools into storm drains, which carry water to creeks and Okanagan Lake untreated. Latex tools are washed into buckets, the solids are left to settle and dry, and the dried residue goes out as solid waste.
Leftover Paint
We order close to what the job needs, then label every leftover can with the room, colour and sheen. Kept sealed and stored above freezing, it is ready for touch-ups for years.
Recycling Paint and Cans
Unwanted paint and empty cans go to a paint recycling depot run through Product Care Recycling, BC's paint stewardship program. Drop-off is free at participating depots, including several in the Kelowna area.
Low-VOC Painting FAQs
Can I stay in my home while you paint?
Yes, and most of our low-VOC clients do. We paint one area at a time, keep it closed off and ventilated, and leave the rest of the house usable. If anyone is pregnant or highly sensitive, we suggest they avoid the room being painted until it has aired out.
Does low-VOC paint cost more?
Usually only slightly. Upgrading to a zero-VOC line typically adds 0% to 10% over a standard premium paint, and since labour is most of the cost, the effect on your total is small. Our quotes list each product so you can compare options line by line.
Is low-VOC paint safe for a nursery?
A zero-VOC paint with zero-VOC tint is the best choice for a nursery. We still recommend painting at least a few weeks before the baby arrives and airing the room daily, so the paint has time to cure. Avoid putting the crib tight against fresh walls for the first couple of weeks.
Is zero-VOC paint completely odour-free?
Not quite. Most zero-VOC paints have a faint, mild smell while wet that fades within a day or so. Tinted colours and primers can smell a little more.
