Interior Painting in Kelowna

Pacific Painting Kelowna is a local residential and commercial painting contractor based in our office on Pacific Avenue, a few blocks from South Pandosy. Interior painting for Kelowna homes is the work we do most, and our painters have been doing it for more than 15 years. Bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, hallways and tall two-storey stairwells make up most of our week, in everything from 1970s Rutland bungalows to new builds in Wilden.

We paint for homeowners refreshing a few tired rooms, landlords and property managers turning over a suite between tenants, realtors and sellers getting a house ready to list, and builders who need a clean final coat before handover. Every interior repaint follows the same routine: furniture moved and covered, floors protected, walls patched and sanded smooth. Then come two full coats with straight cut lines at the ceiling, baseboards and door casings.

Our interior painters are licensed, insured and covered by WorkSafeBC, and every job carries a written 1-year labour warranty. We quote low-odour, low-VOC paints from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Cloverdale by default, so most families, pets and work-from-home clients stay put while we paint. Walkthroughs run 7 days a week, from the Mission to Glenmore and Rutland.

Rooms We Paint Most Often

Every room puts different demands on paint. These are the spaces we repaint most in Kelowna homes, and the problem each one usually brings.

  • Bedrooms and Living Rooms

Bedrooms and living rooms are where colour changes happen, often from a dated beige or a dark feature wall to a soft white or greige. Going dark to light usually needs a tinted primer first, or the old colour ghosts through.

We use matte or eggshell here because both hide minor wall flaws under side light from big windows. Accent walls get their own taped line so the edge stays sharp where two colours meet.

  • Kitchens and Dining Rooms

Kitchen walls collect grease and cooking film that paint will not stick to. We wash them with a degreasing cleaner and rinse before any patching or sanding.

Scrubbable finishes matter here. We recommend a washable eggshell or satin, such as Benjamin Moore Regal Select or Sherwin-Williams Duration Home, so splashes wipe off without burnishing the wall.

  • Entryways, Hallways and Stairwells

Entries and halls take the most scuffs from boots, bags and hockey gear. A harder satin finish holds up better than flat and touches up more evenly.

Two-storey stairwells are common in Kelowna homes built after the 1990s. We bring planks, stair-ladders and scaffolding so tall walls are painted safely and evenly, not stretched from a single ladder.

  • Open-Concept Spaces and Vaulted Walls

Newer builds in the Upper Mission, Kettle Valley and Wilden often run kitchen, dining and living into one open space under vaulted ceilings. The hard part is deciding where one colour stops.

We plan colour breaks at inside corners, bulkheads or trim so the change looks deliberate. On walls over 16 feet we schedule extra time for staging and keep a wet edge across the whole wall to avoid lap marks.

Prep Is Where a Good Finish Comes From

Most of the hours on an interior job go into the work you cannot see when it is done. Skipping any of it shows up within a year.

  • Protect the room. Furniture is moved to the centre and covered, floors get drop sheets, and switch plates and outlet covers come off.
  • Fix the surface. Nail pops are reset and filled, hairline cracks are opened and patched, and dents are filled with lightweight spackle or a setting compound for deeper damage.
  • Sand and caulk. Patches are sanded flush and dust is wiped off. Gaps where trim meets the wall get a paintable acrylic caulk so the cut line stays clean.
  • Spot prime. Water stains, marker and smoke residue are sealed with a stain-blocking primer such as Zinsser BIN or Cover Stain. Ordinary paint lets them bleed back through.
  • Clean glossy or greasy walls. Old semi-gloss is scuff-sanded and kitchen walls are degreased, or the new coat can peel off in sheets.

Uneven or wavy walls are a common worry. Paint cannot flatten a wall, but a flatter sheen and good patching make the flaws much harder to see. If the wall needs more than patching, our drywall repair and painting service covers skim coats and larger fixes.

  • Hallway drywall corner bead repaired and repainted off-white

Picking the Right Sheen for Each Room

Sheen is a trade-off between hiding flaws and standing up to cleaning. The higher the gloss, the tougher the film and the more every bump in the wall shows.

SheenHides flawsWashabilityWhere we use it
FlatBestLowCeilings and low-traffic formal rooms
MatteVery goodGood with modern scrubbable linesBedrooms, living rooms, home offices
EggshellGoodGoodLiving areas, dining rooms, most kitchens
SatinFairVery goodHallways, entries, kids' rooms, laundry rooms
Semi-glossPoorExcellentTrim, doors and bathroom wainscoting

Kelowna's dry air works against high sheens on walls, because paint skins over quickly and roller marks show. That is one more reason we keep walls at matte to satin. For a deeper look at each finish, read our guide to the best paint finish for every room.

What Goes Wrong With DIY and Cheap Interior Jobs

We are often called in to fix a repaint that looked fine on day one. These are the failures we see most, and what causes them.

  • Flashing and Patchy Sheen

Patches that were not primed absorb paint differently and show as dull spots in side light. We spot-prime every repair so the finish dries to one even sheen.

  • Lap Marks and Roller Stipple

Rolling into paint that has already started to dry leaves stripes, and Okanagan summers make it worse. We work one full wall at a time and keep a wet edge from corner to corner.

  • Bleeding Cut Lines

Wavy lines at the ceiling or a taped line that peels paint off with it. We hand-cut ceiling lines with a quality angled brush and only tape where two wall colours meet.

  • Peeling Over Gloss or Grime

Latex over old oil-based or glossy paint, or over kitchen grease, never bonds properly. We test old coatings and use a bonding primer whenever the original surface calls for it.

Low-Odour Painting for Occupied Homes

Most of our interior clients live in the house while we paint. Many work from home, have young children, or have pets that cannot be moved out for a week.

We quote zero or low-VOC products as standard, such as Benjamin Moore Eco Spec, Sherwin-Williams Harmony and Cloverdale Horizon. The smell is mild and fades within a day with a window open, and rooms can usually be slept in the same night.

For nurseries, allergy concerns or chemical sensitivities, our low-VOC and eco-friendly painting service goes further, with certified products and longer airing time built into the schedule.

How Long Interior Painting Takes

Timelines depend on repairs, colour changes and ceiling height. These are typical for a two-person crew with average prep.

  1. One bedroom or office

One day for walls only. Add half a day if the ceiling and trim are included or the colour change needs a primer coat.

  2. Living room with high walls

One to two days. Walls over 12 feet need staging, which takes time to set up safely around furniture.

  3. Main floor of a house

Three to five days for an average Kelowna main floor with kitchen, living, dining and hallway.

  4. Whole interior

Five to ten working days for a typical two-storey home, scheduled room by room so you always have usable space.

We can usually start within one to three weeks of your estimate. Our process and warranty page walks through each stage, from the walkthrough to the final touch-ups.

Our 1-Year Labour Warranty on Interior Work

Every interior job comes with a written warranty, not a handshake.

If paint we applied peels, flakes or blisters within one year because of our workmanship, we come back and fix it at no charge. That includes prep failures such as a patch that shows through or a coat that lifts off an improperly cleaned wall.

The warranty does not cover new damage, normal wear, or cracks caused by house settling or moisture problems behind the wall. We note any existing moisture issues on your estimate so there are no surprises later.

Interior Painting FAQs

Do I need to move out while you paint?

No. We paint one area at a time, keep the rest of the house usable, and use low-odour paint, so most families stay home throughout. Bedrooms are usually ready to sleep in the same evening.

Can you paint over dark colours in one coat?

Rarely, and we do not promise it. Covering a deep red or navy usually takes a grey-tinted primer and two coats of the new colour, which costs less than three or four coats of finish paint.

Do interior painting quotes include paint?

Yes. Our quotes include paint, primer, patching materials and caulk. We quote a premium low-VOC line by default and list the exact product, so upgrades or alternatives are priced line by line.

How many coats of paint do walls need?

Two finish coats is our standard for an even colour and a durable film. A big colour change, especially dark to light, may also need a tinted primer first, and fresh drywall patches are always spot-primed.

Do you move furniture?

Yes. We move furniture to the centre of the room, cover it, and put it back when we finish. Please clear valuables, electronics, wall art and small items beforehand so nothing fragile is handled.
