Frequently asked questions
Kelowna Painting Questions, Answered
Before anyone hires a painter, whether for one bedroom or a whole strata building, the same questions come up: what it will cost, how long it takes, whether the family can stay home, and what happens if something goes wrong. We have gathered the ones we hear most often at walkthroughs and on the phone, and answered each one plainly. The answers reflect how we actually work, from the first walkthrough and written quote to the final touch-ups and the warranty that follows.
Pacific Painting Kelowna is a licensed and insured painting contractor with WorkSafeBC coverage and more than 15 years of experience in the Okanagan. We paint home interiors and exteriors, cabinets, decks and floors, plus offices, shops, restaurants and multi-unit buildings. Our clients include first-time and long-time homeowners, landlords, property managers, strata councils, builders and business owners across Kelowna, West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation lands and Lake Country.
Questions are grouped by topic, from cost and scheduling to products, warranty, commercial work and Okanagan weather. Each short answer links to the page that covers the subject in full, so you can go deeper where it matters to you. Cost and Quotes
Price is the first question for most people. Our full breakdown lives on the painting costs page; these are the quick answers.
How much do painters charge per hour in BC?
Hourly rates in BC vary widely with experience, insurance and whether materials are included, so the hourly number alone tells you little. We quote a fixed price for a defined scope, which means a slow day costs us, not you. Typical project ranges are on our painting costs in Kelowna page.
Will the price change after we agree on it?
Not for the work described in the quote. The price only changes if the scope changes, such as adding a room or finding rotten siding behind the paint. In that case we explain the issue, price it in writing and wait for your approval before doing the extra work.
Do your quotes include paint?
Yes. Paint, primer, caulk, patching compound, tape and drop sheets are all included in the price. The quote names the brand, product line and sheen for each surface, so you can compare it against any other bid.
Scheduling
Interior and exterior work book up on different calendars. Here is how timing usually works.
How far ahead should I book?
For exterior painting, book in winter or early spring, because summer slots fill first. Interior work can be scheduled any time of year, and we can often start within a few weeks of your estimate.
When is the best time of year to paint an exterior in Kelowna?
Roughly May to early October, when temperatures stay above about 10°C and there is no rain or dew before the paint sets. Mid-summer heat and smoke can force early starts or short pauses. Our guide to the best time to paint an exterior in the Okanagan goes month by month.
How long does it take to paint a room?
An average bedroom with light patching and two coats takes about one day. Bigger repairs, a dark-to-light colour change that needs primer, or adding the ceiling and trim can push it to a day and a half or two.
Prep and Protection
Most of the care on a painting job happens before the first coat. These answers cover what we do to protect your home.
How do you protect furniture and floors?
Furniture is moved to the middle of the room and covered with plastic, and floors get canvas drop sheets that do not slide. Switch plates come off, and fixtures we cannot remove are masked. Everything goes back in place when the room is done.
Do I need to move out during interior painting?
Almost never. We work one area at a time and use low-odour paint, so most people sleep at home every night. For babies, allergies or chemical sensitivities, see our low-VOC and eco-friendly painting service.
Products and Health
What goes on your walls matters for how long it lasts and how the house smells while we work.
What paint brands do you use?
We typically quote Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Cloverdale Paint, with Zinsser primers and specialty stains for decks and fences. We are not tied to any brand, so we pick the product that suits the surface and your budget. Our paints and products page lists the lines we use and why.
Is low-VOC paint safe for kids and pets?
Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints release far fewer solvents than older paints, and most families and pets stay home while we use them. We still ventilate each room and recommend keeping small children and pets out until the paint is dry. Our low-VOC painting page covers certified products and airing times.
Warranty, Insurance and Licensing
Paperwork protects you if something goes wrong. Here is what we carry and what we stand behind.
Are you licensed, insured and WCB covered?
Yes to all three. We are licensed and insured, and our crews are covered by WorkSafeBC (WCB). Ask and we will send a WorkSafeBC clearance letter and our certificate of insurance before work starts.
What does your 1-year labour warranty cover?
If paint we applied peels, flakes or blisters within one year because of our workmanship, we return and fix it at no cost. It does not cover new damage, normal wear, or problems caused by moisture or house settling. Full terms are on our process and warranty page.
Commercial and Multi-Unit Work
Businesses, landlords and strata councils have their own constraints, from opening hours to tenant notices.
Can you paint after hours so my business stays open?
Yes. We can work evenings, overnight or on weekends, and phase the job so only one area is closed at a time. After-hours work usually adds 10% to 20%, and our commercial painting page explains how we schedule it.
Do you work with property managers and strata councils?
Yes. We quote suite turnovers, corridors, stairwells and full building repaints, and we can phase the work around tenant notices and council approvals. See apartment complex painting for how multi-unit jobs run.
Okanagan Weather
Hot, dry summers, smoky skies and cold winters all affect exterior paint here. Two questions come up every season.
How does Okanagan sun affect exterior paint?
Strong UV breaks down the binder in paint, which shows as fading and chalky walls, worst on south and west sides. Heat also makes paint dry too fast, so we plan around the sun and use premium acrylics. Read about exterior house painting and how long exterior paint lasts in the Okanagan.
Can you paint outside during wildfire smoke?
Light haze alone does not ruin paint, but falling ash sticks to wet coatings and heavy smoke is a health risk for the crew. On bad air days we pause exterior work and wash surfaces before we resume. Our guide to wildfire smoke, ash and exterior paint covers cleanup and timing.
