Pergola and Patio Cover Painting in Kelowna

Okanagan backyards are built around shade, and the top of a pergola or patio cover takes more direct sun than any other wood or metal on the property. Pacific Painting Kelowna paints and stains pergolas, gazebos, arbours and patio covers on properties in Kelowna, Lake Country, West Kelowna and on Westbank First Nation lands. Our painters have spent more than 15 years working on outdoor structures that bake every summer afternoon.

We work with cedar and pressure-treated wood pergolas, factory-finished aluminum patio covers and steel frames, and each one needs a different prep and coating. Our clients are homeowners with a backyard they use all summer, owners of lakeside and vineyard-view properties where the patio is the main living space, and builders and landscapers who want a new structure finished properly. Many book the pergola together with deck staining so the whole outdoor area is done in one visit.

Overhead work means ladders and staging over patio stone, hot tubs and outdoor kitchens, so protection is planned before any brush comes out. We are licensed, insured and covered by WorkSafeBC, and a written 1-year labour warranty applies to every structure we coat. You get a written quote that names the product, the colour and the prep for your specific structure.

Why Pergola Tops Fail First

Owners often notice the posts still look fine while the top is grey, split or peeling. That pattern has clear causes.

  • Direct Overhead Sun

The top faces of rafters and purlins see the sun from mid-morning to evening. That is far more UV than the shaded, vertical faces of the posts below.

  • Water and Snow Sitting on Flat Tops

Flat tops hold rain, snow and ice instead of shedding them. The wood swells and shrinks with every cycle, which cracks film coatings and lifts paint.

  • Exposed End Grain

Decorative rafter tails show end grain, which drinks water like a bundle of straws. Unsealed ends rot, split and blacken years before the rest of the wood.

  • Joints, Brackets and Fasteners

Water collects where boards meet and around steel brackets. Rust streaks and dark stains at joints are an early sign the coating there has failed.

On every wood structure we give these weak points extra attention. End grain gets an additional coat, joints are brushed in by hand, and any soft wood or loose brackets go on your estimate before we coat over them.

Wood, Aluminum and Steel Structures

The material decides the prep and the coating. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a patio cover peels within a year or two.

  • Cedar. Cleaned and brightened, sanded where weathered, then coated with a penetrating stain or a solid stain. Cedar tannins can bleed through light paint, so white or pale colours go over a stain-blocking exterior primer.
  • Pressure-treated wood. It must be dry before coating, which can take a full season on new lumber. Rough, checked rafters get extra brushing so stain reaches into the cracks.
  • Aluminum patio covers. Factory finishes chalk in our sun, and paint will not grip that powder. We wash, de-chalk and scuff the panels, then use a bonding primer made for aluminum before a 100% acrylic topcoat.
  • Steel frames. Rust is wire-brushed or ground back to sound metal and spot-primed with a rust-inhibitive primer. A direct-to-metal acrylic topcoat finishes the frame, and galvanized parts never get alkyd paint, which fails on zinc.

We name the exact products on your quote. Our paints and products page explains the lines we use and why.

Stain or Solid Colour?

This mostly comes down to whether the pergola should blend with the house or show off the wood.

  • Matching the House Trim

A solid stain or paint in your trim colour makes a pergola look built-in, which suits modern and farmhouse exteriors. It also hides older, mismatched or patched lumber.

The trade-off is maintenance on the tops. Opaque coatings can peel on flat, sun-facing surfaces, so we often use a solid stain rather than paint there.

  • Showing the Wood Grain

A semi-transparent stain keeps the warmth of cedar visible and wears away gradually instead of flaking. Recoating is a wash, a light sand and a fresh coat.

Tones range from natural cedar to dark walnut. Darker, more pigmented stains block more UV and last longer than near-clear finishes.

Seeing a large sample in place makes the choice much easier, because stain colours look different on weathered wood than on a chip. If you are also changing the house colours, our colour consultation service can settle the pergola, trim and body colours together.

Working Overhead Safely

Most of a pergola job happens above head height, directly over the things you care most about in the yard.

We set up stable ladders, platform steps or small staging on level footing, never balanced on patio furniture or the hot tub cover. Taller gazebos and covers on sloped yards get staging that is levelled and checked before anyone climbs.

Before any cleaning or coating starts, we cover the patio stone, deck boards, outdoor kitchen, barbecue and hot tub with drop sheets and plastic. Plants under the structure are wrapped or moved, and nearby windows and siding are masked against overspray and drips.

We work from the top down, so drips land on surfaces that have not yet been coated. If your deck is due as well, our deck and fence staining crew does the floor last, after the overhead work is finished.

Pergola Painting Costs

Most pergolas and patio covers in Kelowna fall within a typical range, including materials. We confirm the real price in a written, itemised quote after seeing the structure.

FactorLower in the rangeHigher in the range
SizeSmall arbour or single-bay pergolaLarge multi-bay pergola or full patio cover
Height and accessReachable from a step ladderSecond-storey covers or sloped yards needing staging
Rafters and detailFew wide raftersMany closely spaced rafters, lattice or louvres
ConditionSound wood, light cleaningPeeling coating to strip, rust or rot repair

A typical pergola or patio cover runs $700 to $2,500. Most take one to three days, plus drying time between cleaning and coating.

If our prep or application causes a coating to lift within a year, the fix is on us; normal fading on sun-facing tops is maintenance. Full pricing for other outdoor work is on our painting costs in Kelowna page.

Pergola and Patio Cover FAQs

Can you paint an aluminum patio cover?

Yes, with the right prep. The factory finish chalks over time, so we wash and de-chalk it, scuff the surface and apply a bonding primer made for aluminum. A 100% acrylic topcoat then gives a durable finish in almost any colour.

Can you paint a pergola without damaging plants growing on it?

Usually, if the vines can be loosened and laid down or tied back. Heavily established vines such as wisteria may limit how much of the structure we can reach. We look at it during the walkthrough and tell you what is realistic.

How often should a pergola be restained?

In Okanagan sun, the tops of rafters usually need a maintenance coat every two to three years. Posts and shaded vertical faces often go twice as long. Recoating the tops before they grey saves a full strip and sand later.

Should I do the pergola and the deck at the same time?

It is the most efficient way to do both. The setup, protection and cleanup are shared, the colours can be coordinated, and the overhead work is finished before the deck floor is coated.
